In-Depth Study Group: The role of the teacher, the pedagogista and the atelierista

Reggio Emilia, Italy

March 28 – April 4, 2020

An intensive week of professional development in dialogue with educators in Reggio Emilia, Italy for a limited number of U.S. educators who:

  • preferably, have participated in a prior group and would like to return to Reggio Emilia for further study 
  • have been practicing these ideas within a U.S. context over an extended period of time
  • are presently working in collaboration with other colleagues 
  • have a sustained commitment to furthering their knowledge of the Reggio Emilia educational system

Participants are expected to be well informed about the historical, pedagogical and political dimensions of the educational project in Reggio Emilia and the network of integrated public services that has evolved.

In advance they will:

 join a facilitated webinar or zoom call with other participants

become familiar with readings and resources published by Reggio Children and available through NAREA www.reggioalliance.org 

share their personal “Reggio-inspired” journey, describing how they have brought the principles of the REA to their current educational context

submit a summary of the particular areas of interest they would like to focus on during the week of study 

This experience is not suited to those just beginning to explore the principles of the Reggio Emilia Approach.

Angela Ferrario is the U.S. Liaison for Study Groups to Reggio Emilia, working in collaboration with Reggio Children since 1994. She is the Founder of International Study Tours, LLC, established in 2005 for the creation of educational travel initiatives in collaboration with U.S. and International colleagues.

The Program

The program will be designed by Reggio Children with careful consideration given to information provided by participants.  Throughout the week we will visit schools, listen to presentations, participate in small group discussions, interact and exchange ideas as we delve deeper into the following overarching topics:

Reggio Emilia as a point of reference

  • Examining our own cultural context and conditions that lend themselves to interpretation of the REA in an ethical way, giving visibility to the origins

Professional development and the role of the teacher, pedagogista and atelierista as a working group

  • The underpinnings of pedagogical coordination
  • Understanding the formative processes of professional development with respect to each role
  • Strategies to address generational turnover in the schools
  • A diffuse pedagogical system of relationships with children and adults working together
  • An attitude of research and exchange of knowledge
  • Linking theories and practices with real children

 

The culture of the atelier

  • The atelier as a diffused culture – within the schools, the Loris Malaguzzi International Center, the community, and beyond

In depth reflections on the strategies of observation and documentation

  • Understanding the ways in which documentation makes visible the actions and learning processes of children
  • How decisions and objectives are defined at the beginning of and during the school year
  • Challenges involved in determining the most coherent documentation choices
  • Opportunities to review and analyze actual documentation with Reggio Emilia educators, making interpretive notes together
  • Examining some of the inventories and observation tools developed and used by teachers in the schools of Reggio Emilia to organize their work

The venue for the study group is the Loris Malaguzzi International Center, which opened in February 2006.

Hotel Accommodations

Accommodations for 7 nights are included from check-in on Saturday, March 28 to check-out on Saturday, April 4. (Those participating in the Optional Pistoia Extension prior to the Reggio Emilia In-Depth Study Group should arrive at Hotel Patria in Pistoia on Wednesday, March 25. The airport closest to Pistoia is Peretola Airport in Florence. Participants will be transported to Reggio Emilia by private bus on Saturday morning, March 28.)

To accommodate our group, blocks of rooms have been reserved at Albergo Morandi, Albergo Reggio, and B&B del Vescovado, and 4 star Hotel Posta all within a 20-minute walking distance of the Loris Malaguzzi International Center. Rates for accompanying non-participants and for additional nights are available upon request.

Cost

$2,450 or $2,800 per person (based on shared accommodations)

The cost includes the program fee to Reggio Children, hotel accommodations for 7 nights, services provided by Angela Ferrario, U.S. Liaison for Study Groups to Reggio Emilia and by International Study Tours, LLC.

The per person amount is based on hotel accommodations in shared double rooms at 3 or 4-star hotels.  Single room supplement is $300 (see registration form). Registration & Payment

To reserve a space, submission of Registration Form and $500 deposit per person is required by November 1, 2019. Confirmation and Invoice for Balance Due will be sent by email.  Balance may be paid by PayPal, credit card or check and is due upon receipt of Confirmation and Invoice.

Arrival & Departure

Participants are responsible for booking their own flights and travel arrangements. Airfare is not included. Bologna Marconi is the most convenient airport to reach Reggio Emilia. Alternatively, you can fly into Milan Malpensa or Milan Linate.

Participants should arrange to fly on Friday, March 27, arriving in Reggio Emilia on Saturday, March 28 (departure from the U.S. is one day prior to arrival in Italy). Our first group gathering in Reggio Emilia is the introductory meeting and welcome lunch on Sunday, March 29 at 12 noon.

The Program begins Monday morning and ends on Friday, April 3 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Hotel check-out is Saturday, April 4 by 11 a.m.

Pistoia Extension

Those participating in the Optional Pistoia Extension prior to the Reggio Emilia In-Depth Study Group should arrive at Hotel Patria in Pistoia on Wednesday, March 25. The airport closest to Pistoia is Peretola Airport in Florence. Participants will be transported to Reggio Emilia by private bus on Saturday morning, March 28.

Airport Pick-up Service

Assistance with making private ground transportation arrangements between the airport and Reggio Emilia for individuals or for groups traveling together is available upon request.  Cost is additional.

Photography & Videotape Policy

For privacy issues, participants are not allowed to photograph or videotape inside the infant-toddler centers and preschools, inside the Exhibition area and the Ateliers at the Loris Malaguzzi International Center, as well as during the presentations.

Reggio Children’s policy allows the possibility to audio record the presentations.

Refund & Cancellation Policy

All payments are refundable in full minus a $100 processing fee until February 21, 2020. For cancellations received after February 21, 2020, no refund will be due.

TRAVEL NOTES

It is recommended to be at the airport at least 2 hours before your scheduled flight departure time.

If driving from Reggio Emilia, it takes approximately 45 mins. to reach Bologna Airport and 2 ½ hours to reach Milan Malpensa or Linate Airports depending on traffic conditions.

Allow more time if traveling from/to either airport by public transportation and check train schedules in advance.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:  All U.S. Citizens require a passport that is valid a minimum of 6 months after their return date to the US. (For example, if you are departing from Italy on April 6, 2020 your passport must be valid through October 6, 2020.)  If you must apply for a new passport, plan to allow 6 to 8 weeks for this process. Non-U.S. citizens should check entry and visa requirements.
